How New Google Doorway Page Penalty Algorithm Targeting SEO Spammers?


Search engine giant “Google” is treading much cautiously than ever to improve the quality of search results for its users. It has now become unusual to get one or other official notification from Google with respect to changes in its algorithm. The latest one targets the doorway pages or SEO spammers to eliminate or at least reduce their effect on search engine results to the maximum extent.

Doorway pages are web pages created for spamming the index of a search engine by inserting results for particular phrases and redirecting visitors to a different page. For instance, a searcher may get a list of results redirecting to the same site and when he tries the next, same results are displayed again and repetitively for all search results. It’s obvious that doorway pages make it frustrating experience for searchers and for Google as well, which becomes clear in its latest Algorithm update.

Google’s Brian White said:

“Over time, we’ve seen sites try to maximise their “search footprint” without adding clear, unique value. These doorway campaigns manifest themselves as pages on a site, as a number of domains, or a combination thereof. To improve the quality of search results for our users, we’ll soon launch a ranking adjustment to better address these types of pages. Sites with large and well-established doorway campaigns might see a broad impact from this change”.

Doorway pages were common as SEO techniques in 1990’s when Google was not even launched. When Google launched in 1998, it stressed on avoiding doorway pages and regarded it as unethical SEO practice. In the year 2005, Matt Cutts from Google came up with genuine advice on not hiring novice SEO agencies creating doorway pages. He regarded doorway pages having thin content with little or no value. He emphasized that such techniques don’t provide unique and valuable content and violates webmaster guidelines.

Although doorway pages have already been considered as spammy by few search engines, Google has now become much serious to crack down the doorway pages altogether in its latest algorithm changes. Google has already issued warning on its Webmasters Tools blog and its definition of doorway pages has already been updated.

Recognizing the Doorway Pages

There are various types of doorways pages. Some of them can be instantly spotted for being nonsensical computer-generated, text-only pages created by technical experts. While, there are some pages designed in eye catchy manner to blend into a website and are extremely difficult to spot. They may contain graphic images, complete sentences, paragraphs and call to action phrases.

Many time search engine marketing staff deliberately creates doorway page content to influence the searches. For instance, if a website is trying to rank for names of cities and is having pages or domains names like ” Ontario widget” or ” Melbourne widget”, etc. and they are created only to enter the names of cities, so search engines will rank them for those specific terms. There are many such ways of creating doorway pages.

If any Website is generating misleading content for your site such as doorway pages or ‘throwaway’ domains, your website may get completely removed from Google’s index.
